A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of both movable and immovable assets belonging to Quazi Abu Mahmud Faisal, a first secretary in the National Board of Revenue (NBR), following allegations of bribery and corruption.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammed Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain issued the order on Thursday (27 June) acting on a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The assets to be seized include a flat in Dhaka and two plots of land, each 10 kathas in size.

Additionally, the court has frozen savings certificates worth Tk 2.55 crore held by Faisal, his wife, and other related individuals.

ACC public prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kajol told the media that Faisal had amassed significant wealth through illicit means.

“The ACC's preliminary investigation revealed assets worth Tk 16 crore. Consequently, the ACC sought and obtained the court's approval to seize and freeze these assets,” Mosharraf said.

In its submission to the court, the ACC claimed that Faisal had exploited his official position to engage in bribery, opening over 700 bank accounts in his name and those of his relatives to conceal the origins of his corrupt earnings.

The ACC has provided a detailed account of Faisal's assets to the court.

In a related investigation, NBR officer Md Matiur Rahman and his family were discovered to own vast properties, including 65 bighas (2,145 decimals) of land, eight flats, two resorts and picnic spots, and two industrial establishments.

Many of these assets were registered under the name of his first wife, Laila Kaniz, who currently serves as the chairman of Raipura Upazila Parishad in Narsingdi and the district Awami League's relief and social welfare secretary.

The family's wealth attracted public attention when Matiur Rahman's son purchased a goat worth Tk 1.5 crore during Eid-ul-Azha, prompting further scrutiny into their assets.
