A high-level US labour delegation, led by Kelly M. Fay Rodrigues, Special Representative for International Labour Affairs at the US Department of State, has lauded Bangladesh's progress on labour reforms during a meeting with Foreign Secretary Ambassador Md Jashim Uddin in Dhaka today.

The visit reflects Washington's commitment to supporting the country’s Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector and fostering stronger economic ties, reads a press release.

The delegation, which included Thea Lee, Deputy Undersecretary at the US Department of Labor, and representatives from prominent labour and private sector organizations, such as GAP Inc. and VF Corporation, commended the interim government for its swift action on labour issues. They particularly praised the 18-point agreement that bridges the gap between workers and employers, ensuring their voices are heard.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary underscored the government's prioritization of labour reforms under the leadership of the Chief Adviser. Key initiatives include revising the Bangladesh Labour Act, forming a High-Powered Commission on Labour, and setting up a minimum wage review committee. He also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to implementing the International Labour Organization (ILO) Roadmap and US-proposed labour action plans.

Global fashion brands in the delegation highlighted the need for fair wage practices and skill development, emphasizing these reforms as crucial for Bangladesh’s competitiveness in the high-end global market.

The delegation pledged continued collaboration to support the government’s reform agenda, describing the progress as “impressive” given the interim government’s limited timeframe.

This visit reflects growing international recognition of Bangladesh’s efforts to enhance labour standards while positioning its RMG industry for sustainable growth.
