An Awami League leader who was critically injured during a factional clash over establishing supremacy in Rajshahi’s Bagha Upazila, died while undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Ashraful Islam Bablu, 55, general secretary of the Bagha Upazila unit Awami League, succumbed to his injuries at 4:30 pm on Wednesday (26 June).
Bablu was receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital from Saturday and died on Wednesday, said Dr. Shankar K. Biswas of Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.
Demanding justice for her husband, Baby Begum, said, "My husband was innocent. He was brutally hacked to death. I demand the execution of all the killers.”
“The authorities have yet to take any action against the murderers”, she alleged.
Around 10am on Saturday, a human chain, led by Upazila Parishad Chairman Rokonuzzaman Rintu and Bagha Awami League's General Secretary Ashraful Islam Bablu, was held protesting the corruption of Bagha Municipality Mayor Akkas Ali.
Later, Mayor Akkas Ali and his supporters attacked, leading to a clash between the two groups, leaving several injured including Bablu.
