Ekushey Padak winning poet Asim Saha has passed away at the age of 75.

He breathed his last at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital on Tuesday (18 June) after cardiac arrest, said Mohammad Nurul Huda, Director General of Bangla Academy.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep sorrow and grief over the demise of Asim Saha, emphasising his immense contribution to Bengali language and literature.

Earlier this year, Asim Saha had been admitted to the hospital due to deteriorating health conditions. Doctors had indicated he was suffering from depression, Parkinson's disease, gastrointestinal issues, and diabetes.

Born on 20 February 1949, in Nanarbari, Netrakona district, Asim Saha studied at the University of Dhaka's Department of Bengali Literature.

His significant literary contributions were recognized with the Bangla Academy Literature Award in 2012, followed by Bangladesh Government's highest civilian honor, the Ekushey Padak, in 2019, for his outstanding contributions to Bengali language and literature.
