Finance Minister AH Mahmood Ali today proposed a reduction in total tax on laptop imports from 31% to 20.50% to make these devices more affordable for tech workers.

Ali suggested increasing the customs duty (CD) from 5 % to 10 % while waiving the 15 % VAT at the import stage. This change aims to lower the overall tax burden on laptops.

“These measures will also help reduce the number of fake and refurbished laptops in the market,” Ali said during his budget speech in the Jatiya Sangsad.

Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali placed a Tk 7,96,900 crore budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 at the Parliament on Thursday (6 June).

The new budget, which is 4.6% larger than the current fiscal year’s, marks the Awami League government's first budget in its fourth consecutive term following their victory in the 12th National Parliament elections on 7 January.

Despite the increase, this year’s budget growth is modest compared to the average annual rise of 11% over the past five years.
