Baroness Rosie Winterton, the UK trade envoy to Bangladesh and British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke visited Unilever Bangladesh Limited (UBL) headquarters, celebrating the company’s six-decade legacy and commitment to sustainable growth in Bangladesh.
The delegation, welcomed by UBL’s senior leadership, was briefed on the company’s transformative journey in Bangladesh since 1962. Unilever’s growth has solidified its position as a household name, with its products reaching more than 90% of Bangladeshi households. Over 96% of its 25 iconic brands are now manufactured locally, reflecting its integration into the country’s economy.
Baroness Winterton lauded Unilever’s role in strengthening UK-Bangladesh trade relations and its impact on local development. “Unilever exemplifies what enduring trade partnerships look like. It is inspiring to see how a company with British origins has become such a vital part of Bangladesh’s development story. Their legacy here goes far beyond commerce—it is about shared prosperity and responsible business,” she said.
Unilever’s partnership with the Government of Bangladesh, which holds a 39.25% stake in the company, was highlighted as a model of public-private collaboration.
The visit also showcased Unilever’s progressive sustainability agenda, including efforts in climate resilience, plastic waste reduction, digital inclusion, and community empowerment.
Sarah Cooke emphasized the importance of such initiatives, stating, “British companies like Unilever, with long-standing ties and local commitments, are key partners in Bangladesh’s journey toward inclusive and green economic growth. Their investment in sustainability is exactly the kind of corporate leadership the world needs.”
UBL’s leadership reaffirmed its commitment to serving Bangladesh. Shamima Akhter, Director of Corporate Affairs, Partnerships, and Communications, expressed gratitude for the company’s partnerships with both the UK and Bangladeshi governments. “We are proud of our heritage, purpose, and the impact we’ve made in Bangladesh. Our commitment is not only to business but to the well-being and progress of this nation,” she said.
