Police arrested four individuals, including a woman, for allegedly extorting ransom after kidnapping eight tourists in West Kathaltoli, Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari district on Sunday.

The arrestees have been identified as Belal, Azizur Rahman, Shahidul, and Sufia Begum.

According to Md Zakaria, officer-in-charge of Dighinala Police Station, a group of eight friends from Puthia upazila in Rajshahi traveled to Khagrachhari on 2 March to visit Sajek.

The following day, while heading towards Sajek Valley, their vehicle was intercepted by Belal and Azizur in the Noy Mil area. The abductors then forcibly took them to Ambagan and extorted Tk7.20 lakh as ransom through bank transactions.

Before releasing them, they also obtained their signatures on documents.

After receiving a complaint, police launched an operation in the area and arrested the four suspects.

Khalilur Rahman, one of the victims, later filed a case with Dighinala Police Station against eight identified individuals and 5-6 unidentified others.
