South Korea’s impeached conservative president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was released from jail on Saturday, just a day after a Seoul court overturned his arrest.

His release comes ahead of his impending trial on charges of insurrection, a case that has deepened the political fractures in the country, reports Wion News.

Yoon, who was removed from office earlier this year following allegations of power abuse and constitutional violations, had been taken into custody last month amid accusations of attempting to overturn election results.

Prosecutors allege that he played a central role in efforts to mobilise security forces and government agencies to challenge his electoral defeat. His supporters, however, claim the charges are politically motivated.

The court’s decision to annul his arrest has sparked both relief among his allies and outrage from opponents, who argue that his release could undermine the judicial process.

Yoon’s legal team insists that he is ready to defend himself against what they describe as an unjust prosecution.

His trial, set to begin in the coming weeks, is expected to be a defining moment in South Korea’s political landscape, with implications for the nation’s democratic institutions and rule of law.
