The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting annual income tax returns for individual taxpayers until 16 February.

Meanwhile, the deadline for corporate taxpayers has been pushed from 15 February to 16 March, following a separate directive.

The decision comes in response to appeals from businesspersons and professionals, with the NBR issuing an official notification on Thursday (30 January).

Previously, the final date for tax return submissions was set for 31 January.

According to the Income Tax Act 2023, the deadline for all taxpayers, except companies, to file returns for the 2024-25 fiscal year was initially 30 November.

For corporate taxpayers, the submission deadline was 15 February. However, considering circumstances that unfolded post-August, the deadline has now been extended for the third time.

As per the latest figures from the NBR, the number of online tax return submissions has surpassed 12 lakh.

This year, under a special directive, online return filing has been made mandatory for government employees based in Dhaka North, Dhaka South, Gazipur, and Narayanganj city corporations, as well as for all officials and employees of scheduled banks across the country, mobile telecom service providers, and multinational corporations.

To streamline the tax filing process for the 2024-25 fiscal year, the NBR launched its e-return system on 9 September, enabling taxpayers to submit their returns online.

The system allows for tax payments through digital channels upon payment of a prescribed fee.
