Garment workers of Golden Refit Garments Limited staged a protest on Wednesday morning (12 March), blocking the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Baghair Bazar in Gazipur’s Sadar upazila following the tragic death of a colleague in a road accident.
The demonstration began at around 8am as workers gathered in protest, escalating to a blockade of the major highway shortly thereafter.
According to the protesting workers, Jannatul Ferdous Tamanna, 32, an employee of Golden Refit Garments Limited, had requested leave from APM Matiur Rahman the previous night at around 9pm to tend to her ailing child.
However, her request was denied, and her factory-issued identity card was confiscated before she was dismissed for the day.
While returning to work early on Wednesday, she was fatally struck in a road accident at 5:40am.
Outraged by her untimely death, fellow workers took to the streets in protest, demanding justice.
Members of the Industrial Police were present at the scene to monitor the situation.
