Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared his readiness to engage in discussions with US President Donald Trump to find a resolution to the ongoing Ukraine war, expressing his desire for a direct meeting.
Putin’s statement follows Trump’s recent warning that the United States would impose stricter economic sanctions on Russia if it fails to halt the war, reports Reuters.
Addressing a Russian television journalist, Putin remarked, “From the US President’s statements, we understand that he is prepared to work together. We have always been open to discussions on this matter and remain so. Given the current reality, we should meet and engage in a rational dialogue.”
The Russian leader characterised his relationship with Trump as pragmatic, businesslike, and reliable. He also pointed out the difficulty of negotiating with Ukraine, stating that a decree signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky prevents direct talks with Russia.
Putin further claimed that had Trump been in power, the Ukraine war might never have begun in 2022. He also reiterated his long-standing assertion that Trump was unfairly deprived of victory in the 2020 US presidential election.
Since taking office, Trump has repeatedly emphasised the need for a swift resolution to the Ukraine conflict, even asserting his willingness to engage in immediate talks with Putin.
Meanwhile, in a video address on Friday night, Zelensky accused Putin of attempting to mislead Trump, stating, “Putin is trying to deceive the US President and misdirect his intentions for peace. However, I am certain that no Russian manoeuvre will succeed this time.”
