Sarjis Alam, a key coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has stepped down from his position at the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation.
"I am no longer serving as the General Secretary of the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation. To accelerate the foundation's progress, changes have been implemented in its constitution, structure, and operational processes," he announced in a Facebook post on Wednesday (22 January).
He elaborated that the executive committee of the foundation would now oversee all office matters, with the chief executive officer (CEO) acting as the head.
Currently, Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho holds the CEO position.
The governing body, which includes four advisers specialising in health, social welfare, local government, and ICT, along with the chief adviser, will be responsible for policymaking.
"The position of general secretary no longer exists within the foundation, Sarjis Alam clarified.
The foundation commenced financial support on 1 October and opened its office on 15 October, with Sarjis Alam assuming the role of general secretary on 21 October.
He served in this capacity until 31 December, officially handing over his signing authority on 7 January.
By the end of December, verified financial aid had been provided to 628 out of 826 verified martyr families and approximately 2,000 of the nearly 11,000 verified injured individuals.
Sarjis Alam explained, "I fulfilled my responsibilities to the best of my ability while I could dedicate sufficient time to the foundation. When it became evident that I could no longer meet the time demands, I stepped down. Addressing one's limitations and adjusting responsibilities accordingly requires courage, not weakness. I have endeavoured to remain honest to the duties of my position."
