Lutfozzaman Babar, the former state minister for home affairs, was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on Thursday (16 January), marking the end of a 17-year incarceration.
He walked out of the prison at approximately 1:45pm, according to his family members.
Inspector General of Prisons Brigadier General Syed Md Motaher Hossain had earlier stated that Babar’s release would follow the completion of all necessary formalities.
The anticipation of Babar’s release drew a crowd of family members, party leaders, and supporters who gathered outside the jail to welcome him.
Babar’s acquittal from all lawsuits, including the high-profile cases concerning the 10-truck arms haul, removed any legal impediments to his release.
