United States is poised to extend $8 billion (Tk800 crore) in military aid to Israel, a significant move announced by President Joe Biden just two weeks before his departure from the White House, reported the Times of Israel on Saturday (4 January).

The report indicates that Congress has been informally notified about the agreement, which includes artillery rockets, air defence systems, and 500-pound bombs.

An American official confirmed to the BBC that the State Department had informed Congress about the arms sale to Israel.

According to the BBC, this new aid package will be supplied to Israel over the course of a year or longer.

However, the Biden administration is working to ensure that as much of the aid as possible is delivered before they leave office.

US officials familiar with the matter stated that Israel has the right to defend its citizens in accordance with international law and human rights norms, a stance President Biden has reiterated on numerous occasions.

Additionally, Israel retains the right to counter Iran and its resistance axis's aggression.

The report notes that this is likely to be the last agreement approved by the Biden administration, pending approval from the House and Senate Foreign Relations Committees.

President Joe Biden will conclude his term on 20 January, when Donald Trump will be sworn in as the new president.

This substantial military aid package from the Biden administration is viewed as a major gift to Israel, which has been accused of human rights violations in Gaza over the past year.
