Charges have been filed in the International Crimes Tribunal against 58 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former army chief General Moeen U Ahmed, in connection with the 2009 Pilkhana massacre.
The charges were submitted on Thursday (19 December), by family members of the slain military officers.
The Pilkhana massacre, which occurred on 25 and 26 February 2009 at the then headquarters of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), claimed the lives of 74 people, including 57 army officers.
Following the incident, two cases were filed on 28 February at the Lalbagh Police Station under murder and explosives laws.
These cases were subsequently transferred to the New Market Police Station.
The trials were held at a temporary court adjacent to the Alia Madrasa grounds near the Dhaka Central Jail.
On 5 November 2013, the judge of Dhaka’s Third Metropolitan Special Court, Akhtaruzzaman, delivered the verdict.
In the landmark ruling, 152 individuals, including former BDR Deputy Assistant Director Towhid, were sentenced to death.
Furthermore, 160 individuals, including the late BNP leader and former MP Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu and local Awami League leader Torab Ali, received life imprisonment, while 256 others were given varying prison terms.
However, 277 individuals were acquitted due to a lack of evidence.
The explosives case associated with this atrocity remains pending in a lower court.
