The trial of Bangladesh’s former prime minister Sheikh Hasina will proceed even in her absence even if India does not extradite her, said Tby Cadman, special counsel to the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal.
Addressing a briefing at the International Crimes Tribunal on Wednesday morning (11 December), Cadman emphasised the commitment to upholding international standards of justice in the trial concerning the mass atrocities committed during July and August.
“The trial will ensure adherence to international norms and principles of justice,” Cadman remarked, adding that there remains the possibility of taking the matter to international courts if necessary.
Commenting on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition, Cadman said, “I am uncertain about what India’s course of action will be. However, should India choose not to return her, the trial will proceed in her absence.”
He further expressed confidence in India’s democratic principles and respect for the rule of law, stating, “If India believes in democracy and the rule of law, it will extradite Sheikh Hasina.”
