The "Promotion Committee for Retired Officers Deprived of Promotion 2024," chaired by former finance secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan, has put forward a recommendation to promote 764 retired officials to a range of senior government positions, including deputy secretary, joint secretary, additional secretary, and secretary.
The recommendations come after a thorough review of 1,540 applications from retired officials who alleged they had been denied promotion during the tenure of the Awami League government.
The report, which was submitted this morning to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday (10 December), highlights the following proposed promotions: 119 officials for secretary positions, 41 for Grade-1 (Secretary) status, 528 for additional secretary roles, 72 for joint secretary positions, and 4 for deputy secretary roles.
However, the committee’s report also noted that 13 applications were excluded as they did not fall within the committee’s jurisdiction.
The recommendations aim to address long-standing grievances among retired officials, many of whom have argued that their career advancement was hindered during the previous government.
Traders have also expressed frustration over the conditions set by certain business regulations, which they claim are leading to disputes with customers while trying to meet supply demands in the current climate.
