Former secretary AMM Nasir Uddin has been named the new chief election commissioner (CEC).
President Mohammed Shahbuddin appointmented him following recommendations of the search committee to form a new Election Commission, said as a notification signed by Cabinet Secretary Sheikh Abdur Rashid on Thursday (21 November).
The restructured Election Commission includes retired additional secretary Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar, retired district and sessions judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, retired joint secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmad, and Brigadier General (retd) Abul Fazl Md Sanaullah as election commissioners.
The development follows the resignation of the Election Commission led by Kazi Habibul Awal on 5 September.
Kazi Habibul Awal-led commission, which assumed office on 27 February 2022, stepped down just two and a half years into its tenure amidst the country's evolving political circumstances.
The political landscape has undergone significant upheaval since the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August.
The following day, President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the 12th National Parliament.
On 8 August, an interim government, led by Dr Muhammad Yunus as the chief adviser, was sworn in.
Since the interim government assumed power, major changes have been observed in the judiciary, public administration, and law enforcement.
Many senior officials, including the chief justice and heads of various government and autonomous bodies, have tendered their resignations, signalling a profound transformation across the nation's governance structure.
