Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus reaffirmed his commitment to conducting a fair and exemplary national election after essential reforms.
The chief adviser addressed the nation on Sunday, marking the completion of 100 days of the interim government.
"I am promising you this. If you give us the chance, we will arrange your desired national election after conducting some essential reforms. Please keep patience until then," he said.
In his address, Yunus emphasised the government's determination to create a political environment that ensures sustainable democracy and prevents future political crises.
The Chief Adviser likened the election process to a train that has already begun its journey. He noted that its arrival at the final destination depends on laying down the necessary tracks, which can only be done through political consensus. "The train of elections has started its journey. It will not stop. But along the way, we have many tasks to accomplish," he explained.
He assured the nation that a roadmap for the national election would be provided once reforms are completed. While stressing the importance of time for reforms, Yunus mentioned that some changes might be implemented during election preparations, and a slight delay in the election could be necessary to ensure their proper execution.
The Chief Adviser urged political parties and citizens to contribute to discussions on necessary reforms.
Yunus stated that the interim government was formed with the vision of creating a new environment in politics based on principles and aspirations for progress. He appealed to the nation, saying, "Do not deprive the country of fulfilling this desire."
"We have begun taking necessary steps to organise the elections. Within a few days, the Election Commission will be formed, and thereafter, all responsibilities for organising the elections will rest with them.
The Election Commission will be able to start tasks directly related to conducting a free and fair election, including updating the voter list. For the first time, the government is working to enable expatriate Bangladeshis to exercise their voting rights through postal ballots,” Yunus added.
