AFM Sayed, the former officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station and alleged mastermind behind the brutal shooting and subsequent burning of 46 student protesters in Ashulia, has been taken into custody.

Following his arrest on Wednesday night (30 October) in Cox’s Bazar, Sayed was immediately transferred to Dhaka and is currently held at Shahbagh Police Station.

He is set to be presented before an international tribunal on Thursday (31 October).

Reports indicate that Sayed, who evaded capture for some time, is known to have close ties with former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

Despite attempts to elude arrest and adopt various strategies to distance himself from the Ashulia incident, he was ultimately unable to avoid capture.

The massacre in Ashulia, which occurred on 5 August, followed the resignation and subsequent exile of Sheikh Hasina, leading to the collapse of the Awami League government.

In the aftermath of Hasina’s ousting, videos emerged depicting the harrowing incident in Ashulia, showing bodies being piled into vans and set alight, causing a nationwide uproar and sparking widespread condemnation across Bangladesh.
