BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has suggested that national elections could be feasible by mid-year, calling on the Election Commission and political parties to prepare accordingly.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday (14 January) at the BNP chairperson’s office in Gulshan, he shared updates following a meeting of the party’s standing committee held the previous day.
Also present was standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, who supported the announcement.
Mirza Fakhrul emphasised, "Elections by mid-year are possible. We urge the Election Commission, government, and political parties to make this a reality."
He further mentioned that discussions were underway regarding the draft Cyber Security Ordinance, promising a detailed briefing in the coming days, led by Abdul Moyeen Khan, who will head a committee on the matter.
He noted, "We have deliberated extensively on the Chief Advisor’s statement about the election. There is no justification for delay. The Election Commission is already formed, stability is returning to the country, and the reform committee’s report is expected this month. Democracy is of utmost importance in any nation."
He dismissed the idea of local elections preceding the national polls as out of the question.
