The Election Commission (EC) has clarified its current focus on preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections, rather than local government polls, with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin affirming the commission's commitment to conducting a free, fair, impartial, and credible election.
Speaking at a meeting on voter list updates and preparations for the 13th parliamentary elections on Tuesday (31 December) at the Cumilla Regional Election Office, Nasir Uddin underscored the EC's dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities effectively.
"The chief adviser has spoken about the national elections. Guided by his remarks, we are moving forward with the necessary preparations. At this stage, our primary task is to update the voter list," the CEC said.
He further elaborated on the measures being taken, which include removing deceased individuals and Rohingya from the voter list while encouraging young citizens to register as voters.
In response to queries about the timing of the parliamentary elections, Nasir Uddin stated that preparations for the national polls depend on the recommendations outlined in the reform commission's report.
The meeting was presided over by Cumilla Regional Election Officer Dulal Talukdar.
Among those present were the Chief Election Commissioner's Private Secretary Md Ashraful Alam, Major Md Mamunur Rashid, and other district and upazila election officers from the Cumilla region.
