On 15 April 1755, Samuel Johnson’s A Dictionary of the English Language was published in London, marking a monumental achievement in English lexicography.
Compiled over nine years almost single-handedly, Johnson’s dictionary featured over 40,000 word entries, enriched with literary quotations and precise definitions.
It became the pre-eminent reference for the English language for over a century and established a model for future dictionaries worldwide.
