On 10 April 1516, the Venetian Republic ordered that all Jews in the city be confined to a designated area in the Cannaregio district, which became known as the ghetto nuovo—marking the first formal Jewish ghetto in European history.

Surrounded by walls and gates locked at night, the ghetto confined the Jewish community both physically and socially, setting a precedent for similar restrictions across Europe in the centuries to follow.
