Many BNP leaders will participate in the upcoming upazila parishad elections to ensure the party's existence in politics, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said on Saturday (24 February).

"Despite BNP’s party stance against the election, there is a concern about survival at the grassroots level," said Quader during a press conference at Awami League President Sheikh Hasina's Dhanmondi political office.

"BNP is experiencing internal conflicts regarding participation in the upazila parishad polls. We will not contest the local government polls with the party symbol and many BNP leaders will take advantage of this," said Quader, who also serves as the road transport and bridges minister.

He said, "The BNP is currently in despair. Their leaders and activists, who once demonstrated their strength nationwide, are now engaging in misguided and negative politics. One day, they will admit that their movement strategy was flawed."

Boycotting the last national election was their biggest blunder, Quader added.
