Newly appointed Chief Justice of Bangladesh Syed Refaat Ahmed, the country currently stands on ruins due to the lack of justice over the past decade.

"We now stand on the rubble of a destroyed system," he said speaking at a reception hosted by the Attorney General's Office and the Supreme Court Bar on Monday (12 August).

Justice Ahmed vowed to execute his duties with integrity, skill, and dedication.

Acknowledging the immense sacrifices made by the student populace and the broader public in the struggle for independence, he expressed a firm commitment to honour their legacy through honest and unwavering service.

The chief justice issued a stern warning that from this point forward, any injustice would be met with strict measures.

Justice Ahmed also urged judges of the lower courts to rise above fear and intimidation in their work, emphasising that those who have fallen victim to enforced disappearances and killings are still awaiting justice.

The session concluded with a minute of silence in the Appellate Division in memory of those who perished in the anti-discrimination student movements.
