High Court judge Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh.

The appointment was made by President Mohammed Shahabuddin under Article 95(1) of the Constitution, according to a notification issued by the law ministry on Saturday (10 August).

Earlier in the day, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan resigned from his position following a march by students toward the High Court premises.

The protesters demanded the resignation of the Chief Justice, other justices perceived as loyal to the Awami League, and a restructuring of the country's judiciary.

In the aftermath of Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan's resignation, five Appellate Division judges also stepped down this afternoon.

During a press conference held in front of the High Court, Hasnat Abdullah, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, called for Syed Refaat Ahmed to be appointed as the new Chief Justice.

This demand was made while staging a sit-in, during which protesters continued to press for the resignation of several judges.
