Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus alleged that the authorities of Grameen Bank have forcibly taken over eight of their institutions.

“They took over the institutions and running them in their own way. The police did not come to our aid when we sought redressal over the matter,” said Dr Yunus at a press conference held at the Grameen Telecom building in the capital's Mirpur area today (15 February).

Among others present at the conference were Grameen Telecom Managing Director Nazmul Islam and Grameen Kalyan Managing Director AKM Moinuddin Chowdhury.

Grameen Telecom Bhawan, located on Mirpur 1 National Zoo road, houses 16 companies chaired by Dr Yunus.

The Nobel laureate said, "The eight offices located in this building were locked by representatives of Grameen Bank on 12 February."

“How would you feel if someone else locked your house? Then what is the use of the law and courts in the country? They don't want to go to court. We have faced many disasters in life, but I have never seen such a disaster,” remarked Dr Yunus.

He said he intends to pursue legal action, questioning how the country can operate under such circumstances.

In response to a question, Dr Yunus clarified that these institutions were established using business profits, not funds from Grameen Bank.
