A mighty nor’wester that hit Sylhet this morning has left a trail of devastation, with trees uprooted by the storm scattered on the roads, disrupting road communication in parts of the division.

Coupled with lightning and heavy rains, the storm also left several places without power as electric poles were broken by falling trees.

The roofs made of corrugated iron sheets of many houses were blown away, while crops in many areas were damaged by the storm.

Kanaighat Sadar Union Parishad Chairman Afsar Uddin Chowdhury said nor’wester hit the region twice in a span of 24 hours.

On Sunday evening, a nor’wester lashed the city, with road connections on a few roads yet to be restored due to the fallen trees, the chairman said.

Dilip Baishnab, a weather observer at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s regional office in Sylhet, said the region experienced heavy rain since Monday morning, with 28mm of rain recorded in three hours from 6am to 9am.
