Bangladesh witnessed approximately 6,524 lives lost in 6,911 road accidents in 2023, with nearly 11,407 people sustaining injuries from these incidents.
The Road Safety Foundation (RSF) disclosed this data during a press briefing held at its office in Dhanmondi on Saturday.
Chairman of the RSF Dr AI Mahbub Uddin Ahmed, also professor of the Sociology Department of Dhaka University, read out the report findings.
The report highlighted that among the deceased, 974 were women and 1,128 were children.
Motorcycle accidents accounted for 2,487 fatalities in 2,532 incidents, constituting 38 percent of the total deaths. Additionally, 942 drivers and their assistants lost their lives in these accidents.
Furthermore, 148 individuals perished by drowning, 4 were injured, and 72 went missing in 10 shipwrecks.
Rail accidents claimed 318 lives and injured 296 individuals in 287 incidents.
According to the monitoring and analysis conducted by the Road Safety Foundation, 2,373 accidents occurred on highways, 2,887 on regional roads, 994 on rural roads, 583 on city roads, and 74 in other locations.
The majority of accidents and fatalities transpired in the Dhaka division, where 1,694 people lost their lives in 1,967 accidents. Conversely, the Sylhet division recorded the fewest casualties, with 388 deaths occurring in 347 accidents.
