More than 99% of garment factories under the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have paid February wages, while around 95% have disbursed Eid festival allowances, according to the industry body.
BGMEA Administrator and Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Vice-Chairman Anwar Hossain reported that by 3pm on Thursday (27 March), 99.53% of BGMEA’s member factories had cleared salaries for February.
Meanwhile, a small number of factories may face delays in paying a portion of March wages before Eid, though all have ensured February payments and bonuses.
To facilitate smooth disbursements, Bangladesh Bank has directed banks in industrial zones to remain open on Friday and Saturday ahead of Eid.
BGMEA’s monitoring committee has been overseeing the process, resolving most concerns, though 11 factories are still facing difficulties in making payments.
