A photograph of outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau leaving the House of Commons at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, carrying his own chair, has stirred considerable interest.

On Monday (10 March), Trudeau was seen walking out of the chamber, chair in hand, smiling as he made his exit, reports Reuters.

His gesture came shortly after a meeting with his successor, Mark Carney, during which he hinted at a swift transition of power.

Trudeau has served as Canada’s prime minister for a long period.

Former central banker Mark Carney has secured an emphatic victory as the leader of the ruling Liberal Party.

With Carney’s election as the new party chief, Trudeau is now formally stepping down from office.
