Convener of the National Citizens' Party (NCP), Nahid Islam, has proposed holding both legislative and constituent assembly elections simultaneously, emphasizing that such a move would help dismantle fascism and pave the way for drafting a new constitution.
Speaking at an Iftar gathering in the capital on Tuesday, attended by anti-fascist politicians, student and labour leaders, professionals, activists, Islamic scholars, and prominent citizens, Nahid outlined his party’s vision for political reform.
“We may have differences in opinions, debates, or ideological disagreements, but these should not disrupt democratic relationships, dialogue, and mutual interaction,” he said.
Addressing concerns about ongoing conspiracies against Bangladesh, he stressed the importance of unity despite ideological differences. "NCP envisions a fundamental transformation of the governance structure, advocating for a new republic through a new constitution," he added.
Nahid argued that holding legislative and constituent assembly elections simultaneously would enable the introduction of a new constitution and facilitate a fresh democratic journey. He believes these reforms can be implemented within the government’s existing timeline for elections and structural changes.
He also suggested that alongside constitutional reforms, administrative and police reforms should be enacted through interim government ordinances.
On election security, Nahid underscored the need for a collective effort to maintain law and order, stating that the government alone cannot ensure security. "The neutrality of the police, military, and media during the election is crucial," he noted.
Calling for a radical shift in political culture, he urged the rejection of outdated practices and emphasized the need for swift justice regarding the July massacre, asserting that its resolution would significantly impact the future of the Awami League in national politics.
