The interim government is considering a reassessment of Bangladesh’s transition from Least Developed Country (LDC) status, following concerns over economic fragility, said CA's Special Assistant (Finance) Anisuzzaman Chowdhury.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Tuesday (11 March), he stated that the possibility of deferring the LDC graduation process remains open for Bangladesh.

"We can certainly submit an appeal, and it will be reviewed accordingly," he remarked, adding that doubts persist regarding the eligibility criteria.

"A committee has been formed to evaluate these concerns, and their review is ongoing."

Highlighting the severity of the current economic crisis, he noted that Bangladesh is experiencing an unprecedented phase of financial vulnerability.

"The country's economic condition has deteriorated beyond what nations like Indonesia faced during their own financial turmoil," he observed.

To mitigate the crisis, he emphasised the urgency of recovering illicitly transferred funds and stabilising the banking sector.

"Addressing these issues will be prioritised as we initiate corrective measures," he affirmed.

He further underscored the vast scope of the finance ministry’s responsibilities, acknowledging that his role alongside the chief adviser presents an opportunity to contribute effectively.

"I intend to make full use of this opportunity," he concluded.
