A petition calling for the revocation of Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship has amassed over 250,000 signatures as of 25 February, citing his alleged efforts to undermine the country’s sovereignty.
The billionaire entrepreneur, born into an affluent South African family in Pretoria, immigrated to Canada and acquired citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, originally from Saskatchewan, reports AFP.
Launched on 20 February, the petition asserts that Musk has engaged in activities contrary to Canada’s national interest. It further accuses him, a dual US citizen and a close adviser to US President Donald Trump, of aligning with a foreign administration seeking to erode Canadian sovereignty.
In a now-deleted post on his social media platform X on 24 February, Musk dismissed the petition, mockingly stating, “Canada is not a real country.”
Musk has been a vocal supporter of Trump, who has frequently questioned Canada’s sovereignty, derided its political leaders, and suggested that the country should integrate as a US state.
Federal lawmaker Charlie Angus, who sponsored the petition, described the initiative as a means for Canadians to express their growing concerns over the influence of oligarchs and political extremism.
“People like Elon Musk are enemies of our country,” remarked Angus, a member of the leftist New Democratic Party.
While petitions presented to the Canadian Parliament do not compel government action, they may elicit an official response. However, Parliament is currently suspended and is not set to reconvene until 24 March.
According to government policy, Canadian citizenship may be revoked in cases of fraud, misrepresentation on immigration applications, or service in a foreign military engaged in armed conflict against Canada.
