The National Citizens Party (NCP), a new political entity emerging from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and the National Citizens’ Committee made its formal debut on Friday (28 February).

The announcement was made from a stage erected on Manik Mia Avenue, in front of the National Parliament, with the families of those martyred in the July movement expected to declare its formation.

At the event, a 150-member party committee was introduced, with leadership positions distributed across key figures.

Notably, the party’s leadership structure features a "Super Ten"—a top-tier decision-making body.

Mohammad Nahid Islam has been appointed as the convenor, while Akhtar Hossain will serve as the general secretary.

Nahid Islam resigned from the advisory council of the interim government last Tuesday to take up this new role, while Akhtar Hossain has been serving as the secretary of the National Citizens’ Committee.

Senior joint convenor positions have been assigned to Samanta Sharmin and Ariful Islam Adib, while Tasnim Zara and Nahida Sarwar (Niva) will take up roles as senior joint general secretaries.

Additionally, Nasiruddin Patwary has been designated as the chief coordinator, with Abdul Hannan Masud as joint coordinator.

Regional organisational leadership has been finalised, with Hasnat Abdullah appointed as chief organiser for the southern region and Sarjis Alam for the northern region.

Samanta Sharmin, spokesperson for the National Citizens’ Committee, confirmed the names of the ‘Super Ten.’ A leader from the newly formed party indicated that the full committee will be unveiled at the launch event.

Security measures had been heightened in and around Manik Mia Avenue, with additional police deployment in anticipation of large crowds.

Groups of students and citizens from across the country are making their way to the venue, eager to witness what they describe as a "historic moment".

Political leaders, diplomats, and prominent public figures are also expected to attend the event.
