The bodies of 20 migrants have been recovered from the shores of Brega in eastern Libya, with reports indicating that a significant number of them may be Bangladeshi nationals.
However, official confirmation of their identities remains pending.
The Bangladesh Embassy in Libya shared this information in a statement on its official page on Thursday (30 January), citing multiple sources.
According to the embassy's post, local rescue authorities believe that the bodies washed ashore after a migrant boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.
The embassy further stated that preliminary information suggests some of the deceased might be Bangladeshis, but verification is still underway.
It assured that it is closely coordinating with local authorities and all relevant stakeholders to gather more details.
On Saturday (1 February), the embassy added that while the nationalities of the victims have yet to be confirmed, the local Red Crescent suspects that all of them may be Bangladeshi.
Libya remains one of the key transit points for migrants attempting to reach Europe illegally via the Mediterranean.
These journeys are typically undertaken on overcrowded, unseaworthy boats, leading to frequent tragedies. Every year, numerous migrants lose their lives in such perilous crossings.
In light of the incident, the Bangladesh Embassy has urged anyone with relevant information regarding deceased, injured, or missing Bangladeshi nationals to come forward.
