Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Thursday characterised the situation involving Greenland as "serious" after a 45-minute telephone conversation with US president-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday.
The discussion, which addressed the autonomous territory of Greenland, also covered bilateral trade, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Middle East, and NATO, reports Xinhua.
Following a briefing with the Foreign Policy Committee of the Danish parliament, Frederiksen expressed concern over the escalating tensions related to Greenland.
"We are in a serious situation," she remarked to reporters.
"We are making every effort to manage this as prudently and effectively as possible."
Trump, on 7 January, hinted at the possibility of deploying military or economic strategies to acquire Greenland and threatened Denmark with significant tariffs if it resisted the offer to sell the territory.
Frederiksen confirmed that Trump did not retract these threats during their recent conversation.
