LLaw enforcement authorities in Dhaka intercepted a protest march by members of BNP-affiliated youth organisations—Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal as they headed towards the Indian High Commission.
The march aimed to submit a memorandum denouncing the alleged attack on Bangladesh's Assistant High Commission in Agartala, desecration of the national flag, and conspiracies to incite communal violence.
The march commenced at 11:30am in front of the BNP’s central office in Naya Paltan on Sunday (8 December).
However, it was halted near Rampura at 12:35pm.
Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP senior joint secretary general, attended the event as the chief guest.
Earlier, on Saturday, a press release signed by Jubo Dal’s Office Secretary Nurul Islam Sohel announced the protest programme. According to the press release, the joint initiative of Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal was scheduled to begin at 10am on Sunday from the BNP headquarters in Naya Paltan and proceed towards the Indian High Commission to deliver the memorandum.
The leaders of the respective youth wings—Abdul Monayem Munna and Md Nurul Islam Nayan (Jubo Dal), SM Jilani and Rajib Ahsan (Swechchhasebak Dal), and Rakibul Islam Rakib and Nasir Uddin Nasir (Chhatra Dal)—issued instructions for activists at all levels to participate spontaneously in the programme.
While the protest aimed to highlight concerns over cross-border issues and protect national interests, law enforcement cited security reasons for preventing the demonstrators from advancing towards the High Commission.
