The formation of the Election Commission negates the need for any further delays in the election process, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He made this statement during a press conference on Thursday morning (19 December), at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan.

Fakhrul emphasised that, as the Election Commission has already been constituted, there is no justification for postponing the elections. He further stated that, with election-related reforms in place, a swift election could be organised.

"The people are expecting a clear stance from the chief adviser on this matter," Fakhrul remarked.

He added that the specific election date should be determined through discussions with political parties and other stakeholders.

Referring to the BNP's Standing Committee meeting held on Wednesday, Fakhrul noted that the party leaders found the statements made by Dr Yunus regarding the elections to be unclear.

He criticised the Chief Adviser's recent remarks, where he suggested elections might take place in December 2025 or the first half of 2026. Fakhrul termed these statements vague, lacking a clear timeline.

Additionally, he pointed out the inconsistency with the chief adviser's press secretary's statement, which suggested June 2026 as a potential election date, further sowing confusion.

Fakhrul reiterated that such ambiguity is bound to cause confusion and urged the chief adviser to provide a definitive statement on the matter.

During the press briefing, Fakhrul also shared details of the discussions and decisions taken at the BNP's Standing Committee meeting on Wednesday evening.
