Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam today asked the police force to play pivotal role in maintaining the country’s law and order, saying members of the force have to discharge their duties with honesty and courage overcoming all kinds of fear.
“Police personnel have to discharge their duties with utmost honesty and courage overcoming all kinds of fear as they have a pivotal role in maintaining the country’s law and order,” he said.
The IGP made this remark while speaking as the chief guest at a welfare meeting organized by Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at the Bangladesh Police Auditorium at Rajarbagh Police Lines said a press release.
Referring to various reform commissions formed by the interim government, he said the Police Reform Commission is one of them, which is working so that the police can work independently without becoming a tool of political parties.
“Each member of Bangladesh Police must perform their duties impartially,” he added.
About the punishment regarding the July uprising, the IGP assured the police members present at the meeting, saying
“No action will be taken against those police members who didn’t commit any misdeeds in July-August mass uprising.”
Mentioning that a large number of police members have already been transferred to different units, he said “Unit heads should ensure that there is no division between the new and old.”
He added, “Everyone has to perform their duties together as a team and everyone should work in combine to uphold the glory of the DMP.”
DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sazzad Ali presided over the welfare meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, he said DMP is the largest unit of the Bangladesh Police and the image of the force largely depends on the activities of this unit.
He mentioned Rajarbagh as a glorious place for the Bangladesh Police, saying in 1971, the first resistance against the Pakistani occupation forces was formed from Rajarbagh, which is a matter of great pride for police.
The DMP Commissioner expressed his sincere thanks and gratitude to the IGP for attending the welfare meeting organized by DMP as the chief guest.
In the welfare meeting, members of various ranks of DMP presented some of their specific problems and sought intervention of IGP.
The IGP heard everyone and assured them to resolve the problems.
At the outset of the meeting, one minute of silence was observed to pray for eternal peace of the martyrs of the mass uprising of July-August, and offered doa for the speedy recovery of the injured.
