BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, has stated that "the beauty of truth is that it inevitably triumphs over propaganda and conspiracy," emphasising his faith in justice and fairness.

He made the remarks in a Facebook post on Sunday evening following his acquittal in the 21 August grenade attack case.

In his post, Tarique Rahman called for an end to political vengeance, advocating for a new chapter in the country’s history marked by justice, democracy, and inclusivity.

He wrote, "The beauty of truth is that it inevitably triumphs over propaganda and conspiracy, giving us faith that, eventually, justice and fairness prevail. Let us unite to end political vengeance and open a new chapter in history, where no one’s life or family will be destroyed because of political differences."

He further pledged to uphold democracy, human rights, and freedom of expression, calling for a society based on the rule of law and tolerance.

Rahman’s statement comes after the High Court acquitted him and all other convicts in the 21 August grenade attack case. An HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahim overturned the trial court's earlier rulings, citing a lack of evidence to identify those responsible for the attack or the origin of the grenades used.

The grenade attack on 21 August 2004 targeted a rally of then-opposition leader Sheikh Hasina, resulting in 24 deaths and injuries to hundreds, including Hasina.

The trial court had previously sentenced 19 individuals, including Lutfozzaman Babar and members of the militant organisation Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI), to death. Another 19, including Tarique Rahman, were sentenced to life imprisonment.
