BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called upon India to respect Bangladesh's sovereignty and uphold democratic principles, urging the neighbouring country to avoid aligning with any specific political party, particularly the Awami League, in a manner that could undermine the democratic aspirations of the Bangladeshi populace.
"Bangladesh is a nation that fought for its independence through immense sacrifices," Fakhrul declared during a rally held in London on Wednesday (4 December).
"Do not stand against the people who achieved democracy shedding blood. The people of Bangladesh will never accept this," he asserted.
Expressing concerns about recent incidents involving Bangladesh's diplomatic missions in India, Fakhrul raised alarms over activities along the border near Sylhet and Benapole.
He questioned India's intentions, stating, "We are deeply hurt when baseless accusations and lies put the people of Bangladesh in danger."
The BNP leader called for India to reflect upon its historical support for Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War while urging a reassessment of its present actions.
"We urge India to acknowledge its crucial role in our history but also to ensure its actions today do not harm the sovereignty and democratic aspirations of the Bangladeshi people," he said.
