The interim government has decided to appeal to the Appellate Division against the High Court's directive to halt the operation of battery-powered rickshaws within the Dhaka metropolitan area.
Deputy Attorney General Noor Muhammad Azmi confirmed on Sunday (24 November) that preparations for the appeal are currently underway.
On Tuesday (19 November) the High Court issued an order mandating the cessation of all battery-powered rickshaws in Dhaka within three days.
Additionally, the court issued a rule questioning why the authorities' inaction in banning these vehicles should not be deemed unlawful.
The directive was issued in response to a writ petition filed by owners of traditional pedal rickshaws, whose livelihoods have reportedly been adversely affected by the widespread use of battery-powered alternatives.
Following the order, drivers of battery-operated rickshaws have initiated protests.
According to the Dhaka Rickshaw Workers' Union, approximately 8 lakh battery-powered rickshaws currently operate on the city streets.
While these vehicles lack permission to ply the main roads, they continue to do so in defiance of regulations.
Over the past two months, law enforcement agencies have taken action against more than one lakh such rickshaws.
