Dr Ali Riaz, vice-chairman of the National Consensus Commission, has asserted that the commission's singular aim is to establish a democratic state by realising the people's democratic aspirations.
Speaking on Monday (28 April) during a meeting between the National Consensus Commission and Gono Adhikar Parishad at the LD Hall of Parliament, Dr Riaz emphasised the need for unity among the people to lead Bangladesh towards a new future.
He stressed that efforts must be sustained both in activism and practice.
A new national charter, he said, must be framed to restructure the distribution of power and awaken Bangladesh to its full potential.
Nurul Haque Nur, president of Gono Adhikar Parishad, remarked that the people of Bangladesh had suffered oppression and subjugation under previous governments, with the nation's sovereignty and freedom trampled underfoot.
He vowed that future governance must never again descend into such misrule.
Underscoring the imperative of reform in the nation's broader interest, Nur insisted that any reforms agreed upon by national consensus must be implemented under the stewardship of an interim government, whatever the cost.
