Six students from Islamic University (IU) were apprehended over ragging 16 fellow students at Lalan Shah Hall on Monday night. The accused, all from the academic year 2022-23, were handed over to the police after being caught red-handed by university authorities.
The arrested students are Sabbir Hossain, Shehan Sharif Sheikh, Limon Hossain, Kanta Barua, and Sakib Khan from the Department of Finance and Banking, and Sanjay Barua from the Department of Law and Land Management.
The incident occurred in Room 330 of Lalan Shah Hall at around 9:30 pm on Monday. According to university sources, Shehan summoned 16 students to the room, where they were subjected to mental and physical harassment.
The victims described how events unfolded. Sabbir and Sanjay reportedly harassed them, demanding one student to perform five different types of smiles, another to hurl abusive language over the phone, and yet another to dance.
A senior student, Hasanul Banna, became aware of the incident and intervened. His swift action led to the apprehension of the perpetrators, who were subsequently handed over to police by the university administration.
This is not the first case of ragging reported at Islamic University. On November 16 last year, 12 students were implicated in a similar incident at another dormitory. Despite warnings and increased vigilance, Monday’s event underscores the persistence of such issues on campus.
Md. Masud, Sub-Inspector of Islamic University Police Station, said that the university authorities presented the accused to the police.
