The United Kingdom desires a level playing field for all political parties in Bangladesh, stated Catherine West, the British Minister for Foreign Affairs for the Indo-Pacific region.
She made these remarks to journalists on Sunday (17 November) following a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain.
West emphasised that the interim government is committed to maintaining peace, order, and the rule of law.
UK also anticipates that Dr Muhammad Yunus will outline a framework for elections to expedite the return of democracy, she added.
Regarding Rohingya support, West reaffirmed Britain's readiness to assist those who have fled Myanmar due to military persecution, announcing a pledge of an additional £10 million for the Rohingya currently sheltering in Bangladesh.
When queried about the possible repatriation of Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the BNP residing in London, West clarified that no specific individual was discussed during her visit, though Britain is prepared to assist if requested by the Bangladeshi government.
West arrived in Dhaka on Saturday (16 November) for a two-day visit. This marks the first visit by a senior UK government representative since the interim government assumed responsibility on 8th August.
In her role within the British Foreign Office, West handles UK interests related to China, Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific island nations.
Additionally, she oversees economic security issues in the Indian Ocean region, particularly export controls, economic diplomacy, and the expansion and application of technology.
