Finance and Commerce Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed stated that the government will not allow any increase in the prices of essential goods, emphasising that the interim government will not make decisions that cause public hardship.
He assured that the government remains vigilant to prevent any shortages of essential items.
"Government's proactive measures to avoid shortages during the approaching month of Ramadan, ensuring that the supply of essential goods remains uninterrupted, he said following a meeting on procurement at the secretariat on Wednesday (30 October).
"Consequently, decisions have been made to import various necessary items, including rice, lentils, oil, and chickpeas," he added.
"We have repeatedly stated that we will not allow any shortage of essential goods," he declared.
He highlighted the significance of importing four key products: fertiliser, sugar, chickpeas, and soybean oil, all of which are crucial for consumers.
The approvals for procurement of these products have been granted, with the soybean and chickpeas specifically intended for the month of Ramadan. He mentioned that a decision regarding dates will likely be made in the coming days.
