In a significant legal development, a petition has been filed in the High Court concerning the political activities of the Awami League.

The recently ousted party is being asked to refrain from engaging in any political activities, as specified in the petition.

On Monday (28 October), Hasnat Abdullah, a key coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, along with Sarjis Alam, submitted this petition to the High Court.

In a post on their verified Facebook accounts, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam indicated that they had filed two separate petitions.

The first petition questions why the Awami League's last three elections should not be declared invalid and why the benefits accrued through these purportedly unlawful elections should not be returned.

The second petition seeks to ensure that the party is restrained from all political activities until a verdict on this matter is reached.

They clarified that the petitions do not call for a ban on the party or its registration.

It is reported that the High Court bench, consisting of Justice Fatema Nazib and Justice Sikdar Mohammad Mahmudur Razzaque, is expected to hear this petition.

The petition specifically requests a directive to prevent the Awami League from conducting any political activities.

This legal action follows the interim government's recent decision on 23 October, which declared the Awami League's student wing, the Chhatra League, a "terrorist organisation", issuing a proclamation to that effect.
