BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir asserted that decisions regarding who participates in politics or elections should rest solely with the people.

Speaking at an event in Sripur, Fulgazi, Feni, on Wednesday (20 November), he clarified that the BNP, as a political entity, cannot dictate such matters.

"There has been a misunderstanding. It was quoted that BNP allowed the Awami League to engage in politics. This is incorrect. We have made our position clear," Fakhrul remarked during the distribution of educational materials and corrugated tin sheets to flood victims at the residence of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Addressing the public, Fakhrul emphasised, "The people will decide who is permitted to engage in politics. This responsibility does not lie with us. Let there be no room for misinterpretation—we have never prevented any party from contesting elections. However, those like Sheikh Hasina, who have committed atrocities, laundered money abroad, and squandered national resources, must face justice and be held accountable."

Highlighting the sufferings inflicted by the Awami League government, Fakhrul accused them of incarcerating Khaleda Zia on false charges.

"The ordeal she endured in prison is unimaginable. Despite her severe health conditions, she has never bowed down. Khaleda Zia stands tall, though she remains critically ill. We are striving to send her abroad for medical treatment," he added.

Fakhrul further commented on the transitional period following the Awami League’s ousting: "Clearing the debris of 15 years takes time. The interim government has already begun restoring peace and order. Can the Awami League now continue their oppression? The process requires patience. Once they complete their work, elections will take place, and a government of the people will emerge. However, we believe expediting this would be beneficial."

Drawing attention to the flood-stricken populace of Feni, Fakhrul expressed solidarity, stating, "The people of Feni have endured immense hardship during the floods. Despite relentless persecution, our party members have been on the ground, extending support to the affected. Those who inflicted such suffering on the country have now fled."

The event, presided over by Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP Convener and Feni-1 constituency coordinator Rafiqul Islam Majnu, was attended by prominent leaders, including BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Abdul Salam, Professor Joynal Abedin, Special Assistant Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, and Chattogram Divisional Organising Secretary Mahbuber Rahman Shamim.
